Get It Right Enterprises is one of those clients. Get It Right, based in the Huntsville area,
develops video “games” that train youth sports officials to be more effective on the field. Instead of trying to memorize a book of more than 700 rules – 100 of which are focused on safety – Get It Right’s software products place the official virtually right on the field, observing and responding to the types of situations they will find while calling a game.
The company was founded in 2012 by Bob Arnone, an Army veteran who previously worked in modeling and simulation training with a defense contractor. After retiring, he became a referee for prep football games, and realized the same visual learning technologies could help train officials, coaches, and players, to ensure that the rules of the sport are understood and followed. With football safety coming under scrutiny, Arnone wants to give officials and coaches the tools they need to ensure play and other behavior adhere to safety rules. He also wants to reverse a current shortage of sports officials nationwide.
“While coaches have a critical role in teaching safe techniques, officials have a role too – not only to keep the game fair, but, more importantly, to keep the kids safe,” he says.
“I believe in the power of sports to shape the character of our nation’s youth. Organized sports today provide the opportunity for kids to work together and be accountable – including how to respond to adversity.”
Get It Right’s products have been used by officials in 49 states, Canada, Puerto Rico, and Australia. At the recent American Football Coaches Association conference in Nashville, the company’s products drew interest from hundreds of coaches and officials, including officials from Portugal and China. The National Association of Sports Officials calls Get It Right’s software a “game changer.” In addition to the football product, Get It Right has volleyball and wresting products in beta testing, and is working with the National Federation of State High School Associations develop a training program for soccer officials.
